Good Sugar, Bad Sugar Saturday Snippets 4/28/12

I just had to share this. I don’t really know why it makes me laugh, but it does. It’s a very quick explanation of good sugar vs bad sugar.
Yes, I know there’s a lot more we could say and tell kids (and I think we should) but if you can get your kids being silly and deciding what’s good and bad sugar… well, let’s just say humor is a great tool for slipping information in.
I hope you enjoy it – see you Monday!

Esther Gokhale Authors@Google Saturday Snippets 4/21

After sharing the book 8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back (affiliate) Thursday I thought some of you might enjoy watching her talk she did at Google. Listening to her is what convinced me to try it – along with seeing a difference just by trying some of her principles.
I hope you enjoy listening to her as much as I did!

Have a great weekend. Remember to enter the giveaway (it ends at midnight 4/22/12)!

The Wisdom of Granny from Beverly Hillbillies

My sister shared a fun article with us about Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies. You know, that wonderfully cantankerous lady who steals the whole show and spouts “hill country” wisdom.
At, The Way Grandma Does It, Lisa had a great post on why Granny is actually right. Several things they made her seem backward is actually the truth. Lisa also linked to an episode about Granny’s garden, and (you have to watch to the end)… the blatant brainwashing about the supermarket. Yikes. It makes my hair curl, and that’s quite a feat.
And that post went right along with a video my family and I recently watched. It was excellent. It’s called Back to Eden. It’s all about making gardening easier. Watch and be amazed.

How the Movie Temple Grandin Helped Me

Last year my family and I watched the movie Temple Grandin. I knew that I wanted to eventually review it, but I didn’t quite know what to say.
To be honest I sometimes struggle with having blog. I’m a very private person, and somehow the finality of posting something online tends to make me re-think, and re-think what I’m going to put up.
It can be scary to put yourself out there.
But I’m finally pushing past that worry to share what I thought of the movie Temple Grandin.

It was hard to watch. Yet fascinating.
For me it was a whirlwind of emotion – going from feeling alone in my struggles to at the end of the film looking at my family and realizing the film had just put into words what I had struggled with for years. What I couldn’t seem to convey on my own.
It helped my family understand me. Why I had pulled back from hugs. Why when they insisted I turned stiff in their arms. They could finally understand why I had rocked back and forth. My struggle with eye contact. It clicked for them.
Yes, they had always supported me – I am so grateful for my wonderful family – but it made them understand in a whole new way who I had been. I almost felt like it eased past hurts at how I had acted.
I can never describe how it was to look over at my Mom and see the tears shining …

BottlesUp Glass Bottle Review and Giveaway

This giveaway is closed.
There are several of glass bottles out there on the market now and I’ve been interested in getting one so I started researching glass bottles.
I found all the glass bottle companies that I could, and narrowed it down to two companies that seemed to have good products. One I found at my local health food store, and there were several things I didn’t like about that it. My 2 biggest complaints being the wide mouth jar top and how big around it was, since I have small hands I just knew after picking it up that it just wouldn’t work for me.

Then I found BottlesUp. After watching this video I knew it was the one I wanted to try.
Laurel Herter is the creator of these glass bottles and she’s a glass artist, and in 2007 she decided to create these glass bottles after looking at plastic bottles and deciding by creating a glass one that she could avoid three things:

the health dangers of plastic
the volume of trash
the waste impact of plastic

The craftsmanship of these bottles is what drew me to them. I contacted BottlesUp and asked about the bottles and they sent me 2 bottles to review and have offered to give 1 bottle to one of you, my lovely readers!
Of course I’m excited.

The really neat thing is Laurel had already heard about the Weston A. Price Foundation – it truly is a small world isn’t it? Which makes …
